my sound went out. last night it was working fine and the only things i did since then was update realplayer (which kept buggin me to update it, but i dont even use it) and run scans and restarted. looking inside my case i found no loose connections or anything and the speakers work fine. i get no sound out of the 5.1, 2.1 or headphones - even if i change to location the headphones are plugged in to. it seems something is now wrong with my sound card, but its and on board thing and the device and drivers seem fine when i check those. please help if able, thanks.

details added after 2 answers: i did check the software, as i said the drivers seem fine and besides, i didnt update drivers at all. as for real player, i only mentioned that because updating it was an action taken since my sound last worked. i tried getting sound from mp3s, other audio files i have, using win media player as well as VLC media plyr, i also tried getting sound from a game and still nothing. if the sys restore to a previous pt works then i will close the question selecting that as best answer - i didnt think of that myself though i did intend to soon try removing real player all together then restarting again. thank you for input.

try doing a system restore back to before you downloaded the update and dont update taht program if you dont use it.

You seem to have checked all the hardware, have you checked software? By this I mean check the driver for the sound card (download and install a new one if necessary) and also try using a diffrent software package to test the sounds. You mention Real Player, but nothing else. Does sound NOT work on Internet sites which ave sound?
