I had 1 male rat and 3 female rats the females gave birth we then had around 32 and my mum set free all the female rats (including baby rats) except for 1 adult and 1 baby. She will do the same to the rest of them but I don't want her to so I hope that somepeople will take some as I want to save as many as I can.
(I have tried phoning rescue centers but they didn't reply so I went on to their website and it says that they can't take any more pets same with pet shops).
What should I do ?

I hope you are not in Alberta, as keeping rats is illegal!

For letting rats out into the population, your mum is showing how completely irresponsible she is. Does she think that the rats she set 'free' will not hook up with other rats?
You say you tried contacting animal rescue centres and they did not reply, well I think you will find that they have a drop box, where you can leave unwanted animals without the embarrassment of admitting why you want to get rid of them.
If you can not afford to look after the animals, take them to the SPCA and get the one's you keep fixed.
Also tell your mum not to be so stupid!!!!

I used to show rats and had over 100 rescued rats until they all died out and I refused to take on any more.

You can stop rats breeding by getting them all altered.

Putting rats back into the wild after being domesticated for over 100 years is illegal, pity we don't have your name and address as the animal welfare organizations would love to know about you and your mum

Rats are one of the easest animals to sex so keep all the males away from the females, rats can breed at 21 days old.

I looked after rats at school - they are great. you can train them to go through mazes and all sort of stuff. I would have a male and female - but crossing the Atlantic to collect them is a bit of a problem. Call a local High school and ask if their biology lab would like them. They tend to like a particular breed though. We had one once that loved cheese - but it gave him seizures - he would convulse and up to 3 feet in the air. I stopped my brothers doing it - it was cruel. My dad killed it in the end. Put the poor bugger in the sun on a summer afternoon - died of heat exhaustion!

You didn't call all the petshops and you know it.

Start there, you will be able to get rid of them. Plus, giving something away for free means a newspaper add will be free.
