I was just curious. It happened with the Departed and I remember a long time ago with Titanic, and also they same the same thing about Chicago and Dreamgirls. And when Hairspray was in theaters and got good reviews they say the same thing about it. Why can't they simply say they don't like the movie instead of calling it overrated?

Some people can be film snobs in the sense that if it's popular, then it must suck. However, on the flip side, there are people who seem to think that if a movie isn't popular or doesn't make a lot of money in theaters, then it's artsy-fartsy garbage or a poorly-made flop. I don't think either case is true.

There's nothing wrong with listening to reviews by critics or word-of-mouth from friends...but personally, I think the best attitude to movies is watch whatever interests you, whether it's a Hollywood blockbuster, low-budget independent flick, or a foreign movie. Develop your own tastes rather than follow what everyone else thinks.

Sometimes you might find yourself liking movies that everyone else likes or which do well at the box office. Other times you might like a movie that no one has even heard of.

The most important opinion that should matter to you is your own. A movie could be the biggest hit of the summer or one of the most critically-acclaimed...but all of that means nothing if you don't enjoy it yourself.

That's how one develops a genuine passion for film. Movie watching is more than just killing time, it's a great hobby with a whole world of excitement to explore.

I don't think it's related to it being a successful movie (because, all things considered, 'The Blair Witch Project' was successful and I don't think I've ever heard anyone say it was overrated) but to it being rated very highly by critics. Hence it is overrated (not worth the high rating it received).

People like to think their opinion matters the most.

Not to say anything bad about it (as I've not seen it) but Titanic, surprisingly, was voted in the top 10 worst films of the last 100 years, and yes I do know its the highest grossing film ever. It wasn't my poll.

We become very pretentious with our likes and dislikes. For instance, yeah a movie could be really good story wise but someone will say something about the horrible director and how they never directed anything good anyways. We all have our opinions even if they are more pretentious than most. :)

Because the movies get hyped up, critics rate them high, (over rate) and the movie turn out sucking.

I don't know. Most people I talk to use phrases like "It's been done' or "BORING!"....I always say "No great shakes."

I just don't meet people who tend to use trite phrases, I guess.
