Pets; you could say there are 2-3 types of pets.
1.pets for doing damage (dps pet)
2.pets that are for taking damage (tank pet)
Warlocks:
Each of thier pets will offer a new unique ability that is otherwise unavailable to the warlock.
Hunters:
look first two things pets do, dps and tank. A hunters pet will do both of these jobs better.
Their cats(dps) can both do and take more damage than the warlock dps pets.
Their bears(tank) can both hold threat and take more damage than warlock tank pets. (threat is how a monster will determine who to attack)
The game is fast and managing a warlock pet can be cumbersome.
Hunters for the most part get "cooler" pets they can pick almost any beast inculding a few rare ones and tame it for their own.
Warlocks through the demon talent tree gain the best pet in the game, the "felgaurd" is like a mini warrior and very fun to have. it will cost you 41 of your 61 talent points to get it though.
In terms of leveling to the end hunters have it the easiest of any class and warlocks have it near the hardest.
In terms of PvP blizzard has tuned the warlock down and tuned the hunter up. Making them just about equal.
After reaching the end level you will be one of 2 players;
a causal wow player or not.
If not then the warlock is the better choice, through their 0/21/40 talent build they are unmatched for raids.
if you plan on playing a few times a week the hunter will be the better choice. simply because they are just as useful as warlocks in "instances"(small raids)
the warlock is the pinnacle of raiding classes, it will do the most damage and offer a few great abilities that raid simpley must have, however, the hunter is a much needed raiding class as well.
the other thing to think about is the 2 most picked classes are (in order) rogue, warlock.
also take a look at the other classes what they loose by not having a pet is made up for in there talents
I play a warlock, if you care to know. and time and time again i wish i had a cat to send on my enemy instead of trying to manage my warlock pet.
so if at the end of the day you want to know who has the most pets and the coolest - hunters
-side note, in my quest to level 70 i have found no other warlocks that use their dps pet on a regular bases. for most end game warlocks you only have one usable pet unless you spec out your talents for the felgaurd.

If you want to be able to go on more instance runs, level a warlock. They do massive damage, but are a little hard to level because they can only wear cloth and have lower armor. The warlock can summon any of his demons using soul shards. The warlock pets/demons also level as the character level. Where as hunters can only have 1 active pet at a time and up to 3 pets in the stable. The pets level on an experience level, just like the character itself so you can be level 59 with a 57 pet, as an example. Hunters have more choices for pets and can be named by you (warlock demons have generated names), but they are mainly used in PvP (plaver vs player battlegrounds).

Hunter pets and warlock pets are different. Hunters have beasts and warlocks have demons. Warlock pets you cannot name and cannot choose their looks. With hunters you can choose exactly which beast you want, name it and train it however you'd like. You can even keep up to 3 pets at a time when using your 2 stable spaces so you can have different pets for different purposes.
I keep a dps/pvp pet, a tank pet and then a spacer pet that just learns abilities so i can teach it to the pets I use.
However, you don't want to choose a character based on the *pets* it has, because any character can have awesome non-combat pets. You really want to choose your character by your playstyle. I started with a Hunter because of the pets and took it all the way to 70. It completely bored me to death and I ended up rolling a mage and taking her to 70. My hunter is now just my personal grinding toon. (Which isn't particularly a bad thing....it beats grinding primal fires with a fire mage lawlz)
I would recommend going to worldofwarcraft.com and reading the class profiles and learning about the different classes before you make your decision. Or, you can do what my BFF does and have alt-itis. She has a toon of every class!!!

If you want combat pets, pets that fight with you, you have two class choices, Hunter and Warlock.
Warlocks: Get several pets, but each pet is exactly the same for a Warlock of the same level (barring talents). Each pet is designed for a specific job, and several require you have a regent to summon them (though you get the regent through a skill). You can switch pets with about 10 seconds of spell casting, but several pets are actively dangerous to YOU, since they can slip control or you have to beat them before you can control them. (Only the high level pets though.)
Hunters: Have to catch their pets. Their pets level individually from the hunter, but can not be higher level than you are. You can also customize the pet by naming it and individual training. Unlike a Warlock though, Hunters can not change pets anywhere but a town, and you have to feed your pet to maximize its damage potential.

If you want a pet, go for a Hunter or Warlock. Hunters are more pet oriented than Warlocks in the end since Warlocks have such powerful spells.

hunters have a more variety of pets to choose from from pigs to ravangers. also warlocks can summon only a certain amount of demons and are kind of a pain to level up but are very strong in the end. good luck

Choose Warlock man. Hunters suck now IMO because there are 8 million per server, they've been nerfed so they suck for pvp now, warlocks/rogues/mages/fury warriors/shadow priests/enhancement shamans can all out DPS hunters now in raids. Level a warlock because you won't regret it.
