When in standby mode on my XP the fan stays on. This never happend before. What has changed?

Here's another tip:

Disable Standby and Hibernate on any desktop, it's primarily for laptops. Turn it off when not in use, it will last longer and be more secure.

Be thankful the fans are coming on. It means the system is having trouble keeping cool--even in standby. I would make sure that the system is clean. Power down, remove the power cord and use canned air to blow out the dust on the heat-syncs and fan filters. This should be done every 6 months or so, except in dusty conditions where it should be done a lot more often.
