I ordered an AMD Athlon 3400+ running at 2.2ghz. But I never had to apply thermal paste before, and I'm really not sure as to how much I should be putting on, would to much kill the chip? and would to little Kill the chip as well...I'm guessing about a layer as thin as a matchbook cover. am I supposed to let this stuff dry, or does it go together wet? I really don't know, and I build computers in my home, just never had to replace a cpu before this high of a temp to worry about. usually the others are around 500mhz. slot 1, or 733, 866 etc...please help

If your Athlon is the chip that has a tiny core in the middle, just put the paste on that...and just a tiny bit (like half of a pea). If it is the kind that is larger and takes up most of the area, put is on the entire area...use up all they give you.

You will want to put the heatsink on right after you put on the paste...it doesn't dry for a very long time.

Just don't make a mess of it and you'll be fine. That stuff will not come out of anything!

You just need enough to fill the texture of the chip and cooler.
Apply a blob thats a few millimeters wide, then use a credit card to spread it in a thin layer.

Too little and the heat sink wont be making good contact with the chip.
Too much and the paste will hinder heat transfer to the heat sink.
Err on the side of too much. Very little should come squeezing out the edges when you're done.

on the 939 (ive just done this :))
u shuld cover the entire processor in a layer about the thickness of a match box cover and then apply the heatsink straight away.
(note if its second hand make sure you get all the old thermal of the heatsink and processor use isopropanol (apply with cotton buds) and it comes straight off
tip
if you cant get the thermal to spread out use a plastic credit type card

you need to use any skinny piece of plastic to unfold the paste. usually I save on with it to the best of the processor. There are 2 considerable issues to remember: before everything which you will unfold it frivolously yet in a skinny layer Secondly, this paste can habit electrical energy so do no longer unfold it everywhere, only between the processor and that is heatsink. it particularly is great to in good condition the processor first and then save on with the paste as quickly as that is locked into that is socket.
