Hi! FYI I am doing all my homework myself but I am stuck on these three questions.
1. -136 - 18.95
2. -17.435 + 11.8
3. 9.28 - ( - 9.2 )

I am bad at doing negative, can you show me a easier way I can do it?

So for example number 3 the answer is going to be negative?

Alright a negative and a negative becomes a positive, got that down.
What about a negative and a positive. Does it have to do with which number is the biggest?

Don't let the sign throw you off. There is no essential difference between positive and negative numbers. Think of a number line. For the first problem, you have -136 and you are going 18.95 further away from zero. So it's just like 136 + 18.95 except the result (154.95) is negative i.e. -154.95.

For the second, you are at -17.435 and going 11.8 closer to zero so it's just like 17.435 - 11.8 except the result (5.635) is negative i.e. -5.635

The last is easy. Subtracting a negative is the same as adding. Change the equation to 9.28 + 9.2 = 18.48.

1. If both numbers are negative, just add the positives of the numbers, but remember that the answer is negative.
-136-18.95=-1*(136+18.95)

2. You can use the same trick as in number one
-17.435+11.8=-1*(17.435-11.8)

3. When you have the negative of a negative, it becomes positive. Simply add the two numbers together.

1)-136-18.95=
-136+-18.95=
-154.95

2)-17.435+11.8=
-5.635

3) 9.28-(-9.2)=
9.28+9.2=
18.48

when doing these problems, always change the sign
to adding like i did in #1 and #3. when you do that, you have to change the sign of the number following the + to the oposite of what is was. like i did in #1 and #3. in #3, i changed the minus sign to +, and i had to change the -9.2 to a positive 9.2. hopes this helps.

1. -154. 95
2. -5.635
3. 18.48

for 3. a double negative is a positive so you just add.
for 2. you just add the 11.8 to the negative 17.435 or you can subtract the 17.435 from the 11.8.
for 1. you just add 136 and 18.95 then switch the positive sign to a negative.

hope that helps

If you have a positive number, start with that and subtract the negative numbers.

If you have 2 negative numbers, add them, then put the negative in front of the answer.

If you have a negative outside a () that means change the sign of everything inside the () then do the problem.

#1 -154.95
