As a class project, I am to invest in 5 securities for the semester and record their earnings and etc...With this, I am to compare those securities to the S&P 500. Since my prof. is a complete idiot, where can I find the numbers for the S&P 500? He indicated Baron's has the numbers, but when I looked, I was so confused and I couldn't find it. HELP!!

go to google finance (finance.google.com), look for the market index summary (on the right). Click on S&P 500, and when the spx index comes up, press historical prices. That should to the trick.

http://finance.yahoo.com/ then click on S&P on the left. You'll be able to get numbers and charts, and if you click on "historical prices" on the left of the S&P screen you can get numbers for whatever time you want.
