We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead based paint
No child proof lids, no seat belts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are
We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

School always started the same every day
The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray
Not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose
And every Sunday, all the stores were closed

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

It was a different world

Yup! My mom would lock us out of the house to keep us from running in and out while she was doing house work. We had to drink from the hose all day. We could disappear all day on our bikes an no one got worried because we always showed up home for supper. We had lawn darts. We had swings, monkey bars and teeter totters on all playgrounds at school. We could get into a fight at school without someone calling the police. We had sling shots, bb guns, and pocket knives, but no one ever got killed or even close to it. Some of us got nasty cuts and bruises though. Yes, most of our parents and our friends parents smoked. But, back then, so did my parents doctor.

Yes, it's a very sad world today when our kids don't get to experience the wonderful joys of childhood they way most of us did.

IMy daughter once interviewed her grandmother and great-aunt for a school project on differences between the generations' "toys" and "leisure". Some of the things you mention did exist in both generations at the time.
Others were foreign to her.
I am looking forward to my grandchildren's "interviews". It seems at a certain grade level everyone does this. I do remember all of these "developments". For these stories my grandsons will label me "pre-historic".

Maybe this community will give me the same label when I tell you that we did not "change the channel" on our first black and white TV because we received only one channel.Consequently we only walked across the room to turn the set on or off.

I enjoyed the piece of writing.

Getting up at 6am on Saturday and running out the front door not to been seen again till around 5pm when your mom would send your brother or sister looking for you.

When moms would bake cookies for you and your buddies, when you wanted to ride the bus but you lived to close to school (1 mile or less)

When you got a cold or the flu, you stay in bed for a few days not running to the doctor. Loved the Vicks

Yes,it was a different world.
The Democratic Party stood for something and had LEADERS like JFK.
Teachers taught and the board of education was made of wood, with holes in it.
People in the military were looked up to.
Hollywood had stars who could actually act.
Then came the 60's and the counter culture, rock n roll, sex and drugs.
Southern Democrat Governors sic'd the dogs on Black children who wanted to learn, remember George Wallace?
May he burn in hell.
The free love Hippies grew up and became Socialists, but Socialist was a bad word,so they called themselves Liberals or progressives.
The schools went to Hell and religion was banned.
The military was gutted for welfare programs that became ways of life, careers.
Hollywood lost it's stars for political activists.
An American President ( D ) was shamed by a bunch of Raghead terrorists and the gas pumps dried up.
Another Democrate President shamed the country with his behavior And terrorist bombs went off in New York.

A very different world indeed.

This was a walk down memory lane for me. What a better time it was. We were safe outside all day and never worried about being molested or kidnapped. What an innocent time it was.

All this nostalgia and we forget that we had polio every summer, and people died then that didn't have to now, sometimes we got brain damaged when we fell off our bikes, sometimes we got brain damaged from the lead and mercury, but we didn't know why someone got that way, and so we put them into hospital storage and forgot we ever had them. Daddy's belt raised a bunch of wife beaters cause Daddy solved his problems with a belt so it must have been right. Kids would get into the lye too, lots of burned esophagus back then, and yes I will agree we played outside, because Mom was home and didn't need to work and someone was always keeping an eye on us.
But we were young and we saw it through young eyes we didn't know a lot that went on, todays kids will feel the same way, its being young, not needing to go back to the old ways that made it simple.
