80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Hi Mudd,
For me the meaning of life is to put into life the best that you can. When we know what our purpose here on earth is then we will have worked out for certain whether, we arrived in a space ship, we have evolved from the soup of the big bang or if there is a superior being of some sort or another or whether there is some other source or reason. I cannot hold on to the religion theories as I believe in the past powerful men made religion to control and brow beat a poor public or as an excuse for wars. However to include the base of all religions that I know a bit about I try to be as kind to my fellow man as possible and when I get it wrong I do feel guilty so try harder again.
You might like to try to get a hold of a book titled Was God an Astronaut? by (I think its spelt something like this) Van Dennikan and for a lighter more amusing side to this question try getting a hold of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by somebody Adams (I think this may have been a trilogy). So long since I read these I have forgotten names and spellings. ;-)

i do no longer often answer this question, yet there isn't any longer lots else accessible at present, so i will provide some opinion on the priority. area of our purpose right here in the international is to make the determination of the place we are going to spend something of eternity. We the two chosen Jesus Christ or refuse Him. area of our purpose in the international is to apply the presents that we've been given to serve God. the generic way we serve God is to tutor human beings the actuality (God's be conscious) and help them to alter into believers (the great fee). area of our purpose in the international is to compliment God, to worship Him, and know what He has accomplished for us area of our purpose is to regulate and watch over the earth, as God assigned Adam to do area of our purpose is to procreate, to populate the earth. we've accomplished this o.k. area of our purpose is to stay with the choose and regulation of God, meaning that area of it is to learn the regulation and attempt to understand to factors of God's will which we are able to comprehending area of our purpose is to shield widows and orphans, and in a broader experience, all of people who're considered necessary, the two bodily or spiritually area of our purpose is to love one yet another

The meaning is different for everyone, so whatever you want it to be it will be, same goes for purpose, no one really knows the purpose fo us being here, but it seems to be alot of things, just look around you and you might find the purpose, but so far we are still searching for it.

One school of thought follows the philosophy of Douglas Adams who states that the "answer to life, the universe and everything" is "42"!!!!
Given it took a computer, specially built for the purpose, 7 1/2 million years to come up with this answer it is obviously too difficult a question for mere mortals to answer!
Personally I think we are simply an inevitable statistical consequence of the chaos that is our universe. Our purpose is simply to be, think and leave our offspring to continue wondering the same question.

Thats the question people have been asking since the dawn of mankind. Unfortunately I don't think you will find your answer. I don't think anyone truly knows until your life here on Earth is over. It could have been as simple as to show a random act of kindness to a complete stranger which in turn prompted them to change their life. It could be much more drastic. I believe the key is to live a good life, trust in God, and let the rest fall into place.

This question always gets me thinking. I think that the meaning of life is to produce children and teach them how to live successfully and produce their own children, so the world can carry on as a successful place.
