It came from the materials of the Big Bang, These cooled and coalesced through gravity over billions of years creating what you see today... this is way over simplified but it gives you a starting point. There are many great books that can take it into much better detail and also let you know what is known and what is still speculation... Far from thinking you're silly for asking, I applaud you for asking questions... EDIT: Yes, it is considered that it was always there... only the fundy's promote the idea that it came from nothing to try and discredit the theory... BTW, that's a 'scientific' theory which does NOT mean the same thing as others would have you believe... a scientific theory is based on evidence that has been tested and reviewed and can be used to make predictions... please do not accept the simplistic 'goddidit' rhetoric that has no basis or evidence at all...

I get all my questions from a box of glazed donut holes...

And my answers from a stale Croissant that's shaped like several religious figures...

...and looks a little like Elvis, too...

The itsy bitsy spider crawled up the water spout.
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain,
and the itsy bitsy spider crawled up the spout again.
