RScott is brilliant as usual. Garnet Geodes are pretty common in rock shops. Here:

I'd be willing to bet that it's a geode. Here's a site selling them so you an see how yours compares. They're not what I would call very valuable.

It could be an amethyst geode. If you live near a college or university you might be able to get info there.
