Strategy when opposing evil??

That evil behavior exists among humans is undeniable. We disagree on how our society should respond.

The near intelligent animals have different strategies that we might consider adopting. Which (if any) do you prefer?

Female elephants protect their young. When grown, bull elephants are larger than any predator and, when provoked, sufficiently violent to deter them (until the bull becomes old and weak). Females travel in herds all their lives, finally becoming prey only when too ill or aged to continue traveling with the herd.

The non-human great apes do have predators. They move about in tribes or families and retreat vertically [up trees] to locations their predators can't follow when threatened. Surprise and concealment lead to some predator kills.

Dolphins (porpoises) also travel in groups. When confronted by sharks, they attack violently by ramming as a pack. They are fast enough to evade ocras (which travel in families)

Which strategy should the West adopt?

Your premise is wrong. Near intelligent animals, just like all animals, react on instinct. Humans act based on emotions and feelings. When based on emotions, every person reacts differently to the particular situation at hand because every person's emotions are different. When you have a code of conduct, or a set of values, that guide society, people choose to follow societal norms or not- but they make a choice. Instincts are not a choice- they are reactions.

You want to insult the people who respond to your question? You ask about strategy about opposing evil, but then only give animal examples. Animals are not evil. They do not make right or wrong decisions, they act on instinct. Humans make right or wrong decisions, and wasting time applying animal logic to human problems is one of the ways that evil can continue to perpetuate because it distracts from the cause- exactly what you are doing.

While comparing to the wild is an interesting concept - I don't think any of the strategies you give are solutions to human evil. Animal preditors are supposed to be preditors so they can eat and survive. Human crime and evil appears to be different. Human evil is basically rooted in a lack of the ability to have empathy. Most humans, through normal development, develop strong or at least basic empathy for others. This is why most humans avoid murder, rape etc - as we understand on a basic level that life is too sacred to be sacrificed for selfish goals like profit or sex. Some people (for whatever reason - the devil, malformed brain etc) lack all empathy. They have no problem killing you for the $10 in your pocket, or torturing you just for the fun of it. This is not really linked to "survival" as they can survive without it, but it is linked to thier absolute inability to place any value on your life or suffering - they only value whatever small thing they want and do not care about the consequences. So, as for a strategy to "solve it" - We probably need to figure out how to do brain scans or whatever to indentify people who lack empathy, and put them away so they can harm no one. I understand there is a moral problem with that in ourselves, but that would solve it pretty much.

A big part of the problem now is that when we indentify someone lacking empathy (for example, when we catch a sex offender that has killed a child) - right now we make the mistake of (1) approaching them with empathy as if they are humans that have empathy. So our currrent system gives "second chances" to people that should never get a second chance, because they are evil to the core. We let out the sex offender with a second or third chance, as it seems like the right thing to do on a human level to forgive, but they then go kill more innocent victims that should have been protected.
Likewise (2) our goverment doesn't have the funds to house all of the defective prisoners, so to save money they let the voilent criminals go. So the goverment is choosing to put good humans are constant risk to save money.

So in sum we need to (1) indentify people who lack empathy and act to stop them in the first place.
If we fail to stop the crime we then should never ever let them go into good society, no matter what the costs or how horrible it seems to us morally. That is the only logical and effective way to achieve greater good.
