Historically thats what happens when you give a group such as a religion a hard time. Eventually they figure that it will be a better life if they go off by themselves someplace. Thats what built America.
As for brainwashing, I havent seen anything that looks like brainwashing from any I know. But you probably dont want to go there if you have a weak mind. Some people tend to make their decisions based on the crowd they hang around. It would probably be best to meet one of any religion in a non-religious surrounding than to be surrounded by joyful people.

While there may seem to be a large amount of Scientologists in Clearwater, you have nothing to fear. There presence here is not much more than in any other city in Florida or the US.
