I know I have answered this somewhere else, but I will repeat.
I am for it.
I understand that mistakes are made, and science is helping to reduce those mistakes.
that said...
When a crime, a violent vicious crime is caught on tape when they are caught literally red handed committing these violent acts, I have issues with the presumed innocent part.
I detest that victims and their families are forced to pay for the upkeep of these people in prison, where they are afforded medical care, and dental care. Some are treated as celebrities. Manson is a perfect example.
When a self professed pedophile admits to crimes, and promises to continue if released, how can we take the chance?
Ya think prison doesn't help? Jail made a clear cut impression on me...I promised myself I would NEVER do anything that caused me to go back...Seems that is a case where jail/prison worked as a detriment. Too often all we hear is stories of those who are repeat offenders....how often do you hear stories of those who didn't go back? Who did change? Not as often as the other.
I am for the death penalty.

This is the tougher side. If your research is supposed to be fact based you'll have a hard time finding this.
However, you will find some very useful information at
http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/article.php?did=1917
which is specifically for students and debaters.
A couple of answers you have received are wrong on the facts. The death penatly is not a deterrent. (No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in states that don’t.)
The death penalty costs more than life without parole (mostly because of the legal process, which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people.)

I agree that it thins the herd, and provides less people that we taxpayers have to support, as they do nothing but sit around and watch tv in air conditioned shelters.
No reason to keep someone sentenced to death sitting around for 30+ years. Ron White said TX put in an express lane!

The benefits I see to the death penalty are -
1. it provides an end and closure for the victims families
2. economic - it costs alot to imprison a person who will never again contribute to society
3. it guarantees that the executed person will NEVER do it again ( escape or legal wrangling)
4. it is the only payment to society that is high enough to recompense for some crimes( Oklahoma City for example)

This is an opportunity to be creative.
Thinning of the herd is the best reason. Those who are caught red-handed can be eliminated since they are only takers. We can't afford to support the takers. Life is tough.
Now, develop your argument.

its cheaper. i know that sounds really bad but so are some of the crimes ppl commit. if they do something soo bad that we haveto put them away for life then why do we have to pay for them for the rest of their lives, prison isnt cheap. but if you kill some of those extremly bad criminals it also makes an example of that person and maybe, ultimatley, it will help reduce crime.
