Given the overall instability in the oil-rich areas in the Middle East, the Niger Delta, and the current feud with Venezula, these power brokers stand to make a fortune with the spike in prices. It does not matter how the overall global economic climate is. In their view, there is no profit to be made from stability.

Also, oil speculators get ahead of themselves by bidding up prices higher than the market is willing to pay for real oil. Some have even been alleged to skew the market prices by factoring in PAST events when investing in the futures market. There's definitely some fixing going on in the oil industry; it's not just purely market forces.

Depends on the cause of the price increase. Who is behind it and what is their motive? Certainly it is possible that the oil cartels are responsible and if so they may have the agenda you suggest.

I disagree, I think almost everything they do is for profits, and that they don't really care what happens to the world. There's money to be made on the downside too.
