Absolutely true.
The Union army expected the Confederates to collapse, and got an ugly surprise when the tide of battle turned against them. The victory provided momentum to the Confederates for months.

True. The North was not prepared for the fighting abilities of the South. At the First Battle of Bull Run, Northern civilians and politicians took picnic lunches and their families to go watch the "stunning victory" of the Union. However, the Confederates fought so well that the Union army ended up retreating in panic, scattering the idiotic spectators. Of course the South was thrilled, they routed the Union army! The North was stunned and humiliated.

True, in fact, the South was so thrilled as the battle came to a lose, they believed they had just won the war. Both sides up to that point believed the Civil War would be but a 90 day war.

TRUE. The North went into the battle thinking that they would win a landslide victory and the war would be over. The South was thrilled that they could beat the North.
Although, both sides realized they needed to prepare more and get more orginized.

don't get puzzled now, First Bull Run and familiar Manassas are one and an identical, Bull Run is the term referred by way of the North, and Manassas the South. The South routed the North.

True! My Great, Great Grandfather was with the Cobb's Legion for the Georgia South, under General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (It was here that he got his nickname), and was wounded, and returned to Atlanta and given a hero's reception. The South thought the War would only last a few more months. He healed from his wounds and returned to service to fight in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, or, Manassas as it was known to the Confederates.

True. People turned out with picnic baskets prepared to watch the North crush the South. As it turns out the South scored a decisive victory by using superior tactics and sent the Northern Army and the picnickers into a full retreat.

true The North was so confident of an early victory and a thumping of the South and its rebellion that picniceers were stationed alongsid e watching the battle. Little did they know that the South was not fooling around and was not glorious and this war would be one of the bloodiest wars .
