This question is larger than it appears at first glance.
If you believe it's the chicken, then you believe in God.
If you believe it's the egg, than you believe in evolution.
If you say it could be either, or, than you revealing that you are open to ideas and concepts .
So by answering this you are divulging something about yourself.
After considerable thinking, I believe the chicken.

The chicken.
Since the egg is just a mean for the chicken to reproduce, it's by no means the start of the chicken species.
An egg need a chicken to exist, while the very first chicken don't need an egg to exist.

the egg of a non chicken provided the first chicken.
the first chicken then produced the first egg of a chicken.
assuming you don't just mean any old egg - we now have to ask is a "chicken egg" an egg that provides a chicken or an egg that comes from a chicken?
I've moved you from biology to semantics but you're still clucked if you want the "right answer"

Well, if I were to say the egg came first, that would be like saying the baby came first before the full grown human being.
I mean, an egg has to be turned and kept warm in order for it to ever have a chance to grow and, eventually, break free from the shell.
Then, that baby needs nurturing and guidance to become a mature adult.
Who will give this guidance to the baby? The answer is the adult.
So how is it possible for a baby to come before the one that produced it?
So, with all that said, my answer is the chicken came first.
EDIT: Only humans can reproduce humans. Only chickens can reproduce chickens. Only cows can reproduce cows. Only pigs can reproduce pigs.

The chicken and the egg were laying in bed together, smoking. The chicken turned to the egg and said. "So that answers that question."

I don't know and do not want to know either...... can't see what difference it can make either way!!
However, I believe chicken came first... well certainly so in the English dictionary.
On the breakfast table, it would normally be the egg I suppose!!
Thanks... have fun!!

the egg has existed for a few hundred million years with oviparous species while the chicken is probably no more than a few tens of millions of years old or less.
