My grandfather built a grandfathers clock from a kit. He did a very good job and he was rightfully proud of it. The problem though was that some of the works were out of alignment. Instead of going "ding" it tended to go "clunk".

I love the tick tock and chiming on the hour. Of all the noises that take place in a suburban house - tv, video games, mowers, phones - a charming grandfather clock is like music.

Pros: Antique, classy furniture, tells you the hour of the day if you are too lazy or forgot to check the clock for an important appointment

Cons: Bulky, old-fashion, not really comforting when you're alone at night, annoying when you're trying to sleep and it's 12 mn therefore you have to wait till it chimes for 12 times before going back to bed

I love grandfather clocks but once an hour is enough. We got a gorgeous clock for our wedding but it chimes every 15 minutes! Thankfully, we can turn it off.

The clock would have been adjusted to NOT dong or chime

If it couldn't just sit in the corner quietly it would find a new home pronto!

i agree with you. my partner has 2 of them 1 in the office where I constantly sit and one in the kitchen.

The office one isnt to bad but the one in the kitchen is going to disappear soon. ;) It is just to loud and there is no volume control. Watching TV is pain because once that clock starts chiming you can hear the TV unless its up really loud.

I've had one for about twenty years. And, I inherited another one after my mother passed away. I thought I liked them, until I realized I'd turned ones chimes down and the other hasn't even been wound recently.

We inheritied one and it took me some time to get used to it. Now I don't even notice it. Big Ben chimes on quarters, halves, threequarters and the full Monty on the Hour. I can understand how you feel, but it does get easier.
