Get a wireless router. They're somewhat pricey on the upper end but you can probably get one for around $60 or so. When shopping for the laptop, make sure it has built in wireless capability. It will do you no good to buy it and get home to learn you're going to need another accessory.

Also, the most important advice I can give, DON'T GET VISTA. Laptops and Vista don't mix well. Been there, done that, GOT THAT HEADACHE.

WiFi router. If you live in a city, check craigslist.org. I recently got a Linksys 2G Wireless router for about $15 bucks...brand spanking new.

Plug the ethernet cable from your modem into the in port on the router.. you may have to connect your PC directly to the router at first so you can manager the router settings for wireless. Set up according to instructions.

Make sure you use some sort of security as well (WEP)...

hi doodle
most of todays wireless laptops are allready wi-fi enabled, inother words they have a internal wireless adapter that can connect to any wireless router or hub
however if your laptop isnt wi-fi enabled you can use either a wireless pcmcia/notbook slot in card or a usb wireless adapter, these work in the same way as the internal wifi
then its just a case of installing the drivers and software for the wifi device and then run the isp(internet service provider)software to configure your wireless device to the router or hub, this is pretty easy as all internet providers cater for wireless connection
further information can be found at http://www.geeks.com/techtips/2005/techtips-17MAR05.htm
hope this helps
good luck mate !

A WiFi router with a very good User Manual.

That's it. Your ISP may offer an upgrade, if your DSL / Cable modem doesn't have WiFi built-in already. Then, they will walk you through the setup.

Read your laptop User Manual, too.
