I think it's 2 different things. I'm 6 lbs overweight but I don't think I'm fat:)) Fat is being 20 or 30% above your normal weight limit.

I feel like their denotation (or dictionary definition) is generally the same.

But their connotation, or how people perceive the words, is very different. I feel like overweight is a medical term, a word used more often to describe someone who is physically unhealthy because of their weight. It seems to me that "fat" is an aesthetic term, a way to describe looks.

Overweight is just fat.

Americans tend to do this a lot. "I'm not a skin and bones kind of girl" usually will translate into a young lady with a serious over eating disorder.

They're different; fat would be saying someone is solid fat, which is not possible, and overweight could be just 5 lbs.

It is a nicer term to use but all the terms basically mean the same - you think the person is fat. For me at 620, I don't mind the terms as they are factually correct. I like to be positive and reply "Thanks for noticing my size; yes, I am fat and I love it!"

Yes. It is different because for "overwight" there is a "limit" for that and for "fat" it is about your "size".
