I know it's hard to even broach the subject of weight with your friend. You don't want to seem insensitive and many people would be pissed off if you had a talk with them about their weight issues. Chances are he has a mirror, he knows he is overweight.
I would suggest instead think of active and creative ways to hang out. Maybe you both like basketball and you can suggest a weekly b-ball match or maybe you both like bike riding, or if you both just like video games you can suggest a Dance, Dance, Revolution (or similar) night. The point is lead by example... and why don't you suggest the restaurants from now. Head him off at the fast food pass.
You are right to be worried, and it is awesome that you want to help, but you have to do it in a way that isn't going to drive your friend away.

Wow that's not good plan a night where you get tons of movies like supersize me and put food that he normally eats out for him then mabey he will be so grossed out by the movies he will look down at his food and relize he should portion his diet. If things don't work then he has a real prob and needs to get help

tell him that you are worried about him and that you would not want to loose him as a friend
and in a nice way say that average healthy 17 year olds are not 20 stone
show him the film 'super size me' and this should shock him about how badly its affecting his body and his heart
also tell him it is not fair on his family because if you carry on you will die etc
good luck

You're a good friend to be worried. Show him that you care...and help him out by reminding him not to overeat particularly fast food.
Just remember there must be a reason behind this obsession...with teenagers it's usually a feeling of emptiness, loneliness or rejection. Another way you can help him is by finding out what he feels when he craves fast food.

I agree with Siamsa......definitely rent "Supersize Me" and have him watch. It gives you a whole new aspect on eating fast food. Good luck, you are a good friend to be concerned for him.

Rent the movie "Supersize Me" and make him watch it. Trust me, he won't touch fast food after that!
