i have a 99 mazda protege which makes loud thumping noises when i go over the smallest of bumps. I have checked the struts, the bearings, the ball joints, control arms,cv joints and nothing on the suspension seems bad. The engine mounts are fine also but i just cant find whats making this noise.

Occasionally the front sway bar links wear out at one of the four ends. There are 2 per side. Have someone ride beside you in another car to observe your front wheels when you drive over bumps. If the struts are bad they will actually see daylight under the front tires as the struts can not control the up and down movement of your suspension. When struts really go bad wheels will bounce wildly when hitting a bump.

How did you check your struts? A bad strut wouldn't look any different than a good one. It sounds to me like one of them is bottoming out. I think that's your problem...you are probably due for new ones. Unfortunately, that means shelling out a couple hundred bucks...but the annoying bump will go away. Good luck!

do check the suspension bushings, they must have been worn out. or the hangers of exhaust pipe and muffler, they might be loose.
