Richmond is a mid-sized city that serves as a transportation hub due to the intersection of Interstates 64 and 95 (with I-85 terminating in Petersburg a few miles south), with the deep water terminal in the James River able to accept ocean going ships, and also the train tracks going through. The metro region covers not only the City of Richmond, but the counties of Henrico and Chesterfield, and Hanover.
Richmond has several major malls, but they all seem to have the same chain stores in them. There are some neat restaurants in the area. What ever food you want to try there is at least one or two restaurants that have it.
Carytown is one of the neat places that I like to go to. It is located on Cary Street between Boulevard and I-195. A large number of quirky/specialty stores, andtiques, clothes, restaurants, and the Byrd Theater. The Byrd is a beautiful theater built in the 1920's. It shows second run $1.99 movies. It's a great place to go for concerts and midnight movies.
You can swing out to the west end of Henrico. The Short Pump area has a lot of clubs, restauraunts, and shops.
There are snotty people in Richmond, but there are snotty people everywhere.
There are two main colleges in Richmond: VCU and VSU. The presence of the two schools means that there is a lot of night life and events for the 20 something crowd.
There is a good combination of modern life and history here. I enjoy living here in Richmond.
Good luck!

Don't you absolutely love it when people answer your question with "Ask someone who lives there." After all, with Yahoo! Answers isn't that what you are trying to do? DUH!!
Anyway, Richmond is a neat town, but the lady who said it is cliquey is quite right. There are a BUNCH of pretentious snobs in Richmond. I should know, my dad (King of PSes) lived there for many years. But, this will only keep you from being invited to their little parties, unless you too are a pretentious snob. Other than that, they are cordial, and at times friendly. Very arty community, so if you have an art collection that's worth discussing that will help too. People aside, really great restaurants. Nice districts such as the fan, Careytown, etc.
If you live in the city, visit the place where you are thinking of living at night. The difference between Monument (you'll understand when you see it) and the slums is less than a block. This is common in the south, for the slums to be relatively close to the most affluent areas.

Well, Richmond is the capital city of VA...and the downtown is neat with alot of historical buildings and such. I lived there about 16 yrs ago. And we lived south of the james river which is a newer area. Apparently alot of old, rich families lived north of the James river...it can be cliquey I heard in the social circles.
Out side in the burbs, I found it to be very country....people dont get out much. They are born and raised there and dont go anywhere else. Go up to northern VA and it is a whole different world....much better than Richmond.

Virginia Beach is about and hour and a half from Richmond actually. VA Beach is OK for vacation or if you like to party etc but the area is not all that metropolitian. If you like a medium paced lifestyle, it may be decent for you.
