Community Colleges are not as respected by employers as 4 years Universities/Colleges. If you don't have the grades to get into a 4-year college, though, you could go to a CC and then transfer. Online colleges are also not respected as much.
Colleges look at your SAT or ACT scores (depends on the college), you SAT II scores (colleges usually require 2--one in English/Humanities and one in Science/Math.) Scores depend on what college you are looking at.
In terms of being far away or being close to home, it depends on how close you are with your family. If you are very close with them, it's best to be within driving distance. Being so far away that you need to fly home can be very difficult and expensive. But then again, you probably don't want to live at home--living in a dorm is part of the college experience and important in bonding with your classmates.

Don't stress so much... Community colleges are great for students who are not sure about what career path to take. They are usually cheaper and staying close to home makes it even less expensive. Whenever you go out of state you pay a heavy fee 3-4 x the tuition rate. You can experiment and take interesting classes just to discover what you want. After you make that decision research Universities that suit your needs. By that time you will know more what to look for in a college... well because you are in college. Don't stress... and enjoy.

I say go to a community college close to home to get whatever prerequisites done until you decide what you want to major in because it's usually cheaper, unless you already know what you want to do...then, depending on what you want to do, pick a college that has a good reputation for producing a knowledgeable graduate in that field...then depending on how good your relationship is with your family will dictate how "close" or how "faaaaarrrrrrrr awwwaaaayyyy" you want to be from them!! ;)

My parents are going to send me to a community college first, because it costs less money to get the basics out of the way before I go to a university in California.I live in Washington, so tuition will be a problem, but I want to do it anyway. i want to study marine mammals. I keep finding different places I want to go for college, and I can't decide!
