What was the principle behind beating a child who did wrong during this time, or beating in general? Why was it done, what was it supposed to accomplish, frequency and severity?

I apologize, I should have clarified. I mean the American South.

Almost all societies once regarded children as the property of their parents, to be treated (or mistreated) in whatever way their elders considered appropriate. As recently as the 19th century, children were viewed as having very few human or civil rights that might be in conflict with parental wishes. Any punishment that did not actually maim or disfigure a child was thought to be appropriate.
The Western view of childhood changed radically in the 19th century, one of the many profound changes occurring during the Victorian era.It was the Victorians in the 19th century that created the increasingly sentimental view of childhood now widely accepted. The modern concept of childhood is a very recent and novel concept in the human experience. Children did not enjoy any of the salient features of modern childhood meaning the early period of an individuals life when he or she is allow to play and learn and which innocent ideleness and amusement is permitted.
"Beatings" and spanking are two very different things. The origins of corporal punishment, spankings, etc, are said to originate with a Biblical reference to "spare the rod, spoil the child"....children, historically, were thought of as miniature adults, and all the behaviors and responsibilities of adults were applied to children.
There was not a set pattern of times, etc, that such punishment was used. Popular fiction from the era gives a slanted view of it all....like Dickens in Oliver Twist.
