There are several that I refuse to give up, so they go into storage for a future home library. Most others get passed on and the one I pass it on to is free to give it away as well. If the book is of an educational type, it is generally one I'll keep and mark up to refer to later.

When I lived in a house, I kept them all. I had at one time about 50,000 of them. When I moved I gave most of them to the VA Hospital here in Sacramento. The rest I either sold for pennies on the dollar or if they were collectible for quite a bit more. Wish I still had them now, they would have been worth a fortune. Some of them still had the original price of 35 cents stamped on the books.

I am and always have been an avid reader. When I was raising my family, the rec room in my home was bookcases on all walls....

I have been going to the same Book Trader for 10 years. All of my paperbacks are taken there where I can accumulate credit towards others I haven't read.

Rarely do I buy hardbacks. I don't have the room for them in my little place. Plus, I don't like spending the money for them. I have patience and can wait until it comes out in paperback.

The only books I hang on to are usually reference books or extremely good history books.

Some I hang on to as reference material. The rest are split between two entities. One is the Friends of the Southern Nevada Libraries who run used book outlets at the different library branches and also run a book sale for their members.
The other entity is one most people have never heard of. In virtually every port city in the world, the Catholic Church has a chapel called "Mary, Star of the Sea". One of the things they do in their ministry to merchant seamen is to provide them with books to read at sea. That's where some of my books go.

My library is huge. I cannot part with my treasured books. I've taken a huge number of college classes, and received many degrees...................I bring that up, because so many of my books are educational and I enjoy looking back at them. My novels are wonderful, as well. Normally, I will keep them to read again, and, in some cases, I WILL give some of them up to a person or person whom I really believe would enjoy them. I am a published writer, so, many of the books in my library have my writings in them.

I hate to throw them away. Makes me feel like a Hitler. But the libraries and charities don't want them. Especially the paper back ones. Would think there is always room for novels. I have so many that don't know what to do with them. So have not brought any for a long time. I enjoy westerns the most.

I keep most of the books I have bought over the years. My most treasured ones are those handed down to me from my grandparents to my mother and now will be left to my family. I don't purchase many books now, I get most of them from the library. The library systems are wonderful. We are able to put holds on on books and renew them. I have even received books from other states, ones which were lost in our libraries. I still love to go to used book stores.

I had a home library for my more expensive books. Paper back fictions I usually share and tell others to pass them on. Now that I have moved to a smaller house I think I will pass them on to freecycle. Sorry you are not in the area.

After going through any book, I ponder whether it is worth to retain it for ever or not.In case the book is worth retaining, I keep it hidden in a seperate bookcase.. The other group of books will be given to some charitable library. Recently I gave away a good lot of books to local jail for use of inmates. I hate to see books eaten by white ants or sold as old newspapers.

Lady G.... I have always been an avid reader, my husband too. Books were my vacation, as I could never afford to take one while raising the children. My contribution to the authors... buying hard back books... And yes... I do hoard them. My Den, is a library/media room... we just finished building in all the bookshelves, and I simply love it... It's my "be at peace room". Our friends are always welcome to come borrow books, or just sit and read. And, we (our circle of friends) have bags of paperbacks that are passed around and given away. Unfortunately, in my divorce my X kept a lot of my books... I wouldn't have minded if he bothered to read any of them... but he kept them just for meanness. Maybe one day he will at least give them to the kids... there is always hope.
