I always shoot my husband a disapproving(you ain't gettin any)glance and he corrects himself-magically i go from "ol lady" to "beautiful wife"!

It's just a man thing. Men actually like the idea of being accountable to a woman. They just don't want to admit it. Hence, she's 'the' wife, the old ball and chain, the chief, the boss, or whatever else makes her sound like the villan in the marriage. In most cases, this is all in fun.

Sometimes, we don't want to come across too soft & sensitive, especially to our mates, so we tend to mask our term of endearment by turning the vocabulary into a masculine sense. We dont mean anything derogatory but it does sound condescending. Further, in Australia, a wife is also jokingly referred to as the "Handbrake" (puts a stop to things), or the "Credit Card" (expert user of), or the "Minister for War & Finance" (sorta speaks for itself), etc. We still love ya's...

because they're trying to be funny, and everyone has "the wife" but not "my wife". So all the other men in the room can relate to what he's saying

I don't know why they do it but it infuriates me!!!!!
"The cat, the dog, the car, the wife".....OOOOO!!!!
Any man who refers to his spouse using that language is someone I will simply not be around. He and I would have nothing in common and certainly nothing to talk about.
What I don't get is why "the wife" doesn't straighten him out.....

They think they are being funny. ha ha
Every time I called my husband at work, they referred to me as 'the government'....which essentially means the same thing as 'the wife' in my opinion. A position of 'seemingly' ultimate power. Again. ha ha

That sounds like he won you. What did you win? "The Wife."
Like the Oscar.
My Husband calls me "my wife" or Samm, no I have no name that even resembles Samm. He began it 40 years ago and still does it. If he ever uses my real name, it is serious.
