There would a bunch of moderates heaving sighs to see those who are better off and mocking at those who are less well off.

It appears you are blaming lack of "resources" for all the world's problems (the "HAVES" against the "HAVE NOTS").
But I don't believe that. Lack of something (natural resources, money, whatever) usually causes "dissatisfaction", but having enough of everything usually DOES NOT cause "satisfaction".
Therefore, if everyone in the world had all the material things they could possible need and use, they would want something else:
Most world problems are (and always have been) caused by philosophical differences, such as religious, moral and ethical beliefs. And unfortunately, I believe this will always be true.

Still have greed and selfishness. Someone would want MORE than their share. Someone would want to be Alpha dog. Someone would want to rule, be in charge, lead. Communism was supposed to be about equality and everyone having the same... and just look at the mess that created. I don't think you can have an equal society. There has to be a pecking order. Like in the animal kingdom. There needs to be a leader... and a leader needs followers! We need ALL people. A Variety. Not everyone can be a surgeon, because then who would empty the bins or stack the supermarket shelves. I think everyone needs to be the best they personally can be. Its about finding your niche. Life would be boring if things were equal because then you wouldn't have anything to aim for or work towards. "We" all want to move forward and "better" ourselves... if we were all the same, what would we then aim for and do?

If you are speaking of material resources, then the primary problem people have would still be there. They would still be searching for fulfillment.
Ultimate satisfaction comes from within, and not from material resources. It comes from a kind of surrender of those material things... and then all life, both inner and outer come to find fulfillment.
This is about the immortal inner resource.

I think there would be enough resources to sustain the population, but there would always be the risk of various groups, united by location, religion or culture, attempting to take resources and territory away from other groups. Greed and aggression are not eliminated by equitable property distribution.

Travel and commerce might be reduced, no need to trade stuff with anywhere else, everybody has the same. I would think this might interfere with invention and discovery.

You read my mind and took the words right out of my mouth. That is the question I have pondered often. I think we would have less problems, environmentally.
