i have a court date to defend a family member and i need to know if court is open on election day because the news says that all government offices will be closed. isn't a court house part of the government? but yet the post office is open. i dont get it. please help.

courts will be open. just like town/ city halls will be open.

This varies district to district/state to state, and depends primarily on the court worker's union contract.

Call the clerk at the court to be sure, but if they scheduled a hearing/court date for today, then I would assume they are open as the employees knew when the case was filed what dates the court would be in session.

Courts are closed on election day to give the voters ample time to exercise their right to suffrage.
