m adding aminate flooring to my foyer... It would be easiest just to raise the trim, but i cant picture in my head if the reduced clearance between the quarter round and the top of the 4'' trim would look bad/ be noticable

How does the foyer blend into the next room(s)? Does the baseboard and quarter round meet the baseboard and quarter in another room?

If so, then there might be a vertical miss match where the two pieces from each room meet. If you do have this problem, it is better that only the quarter round be miss matched and not the baseboard. That is less noticeable, so I wouldn't raise the baseboard.

Otherwise, I don't think the change is really going to be apparent to most people.

You need to raise the quarter round to get a good fit with the flooring. But you might want to raise the entire baseboard assembly. Just take it all off,put down the floor, add back the floor trim and the 1/4 round. The everything will be right.

You're only raising it by the thickness of the laminate which is only about 3/8 to 1/2 an inch. Baseboard comes in a few different sizes so it's not uncommon to see some differences. I've done this in several rooms in my house and you can't tell the difference.

Besides, what's the alternative? You probably don't want to remove all of your baseboard and undercutting it isn't a reasonable solution. I'd say just lay it and put the quarter round back up. I

One other thing you could do is buy smaller quarter round. if you have 1/2" you can but 1/4" or 3/8" quarter round. My guess you wouldn't see the difference. But when pulling off the old trim and you break a bunch might want to buy smaller.
