If you are talking about electric power, it depends on how long the power will be off and where you are.

Let's assume you are in a "typical" home and know the power will be off for a few hours (for whatever reason).

I would make sure I had adequate light, such as candles or flashlights, to last for the time the electricity was off.

I would make sure I had an adequate water supply for the time the electric is off (if your water supply requires electricity, such as a home well).

I would make sure I had adequate heat that did not require electricity.

I would assure that my frozen food was frozen solid enough to survive the time the electricity was off. I would turn the freezer to its coldest setting for the 30 mintues before the electricity went off.

I would turn off unneccasary electrical appliances (TVs and computers, etc) to assure they weren't damaged when the electric returns.

There are other things to do, depending on how much advance notice you have.

Have Hot Meal Make a Hot Drink - Heat up the Bed.

To keep warm and nourished.

Actually filling a flask with hot water to make later drinks is also a very good idea and if one had two flasks one could make another one with hot soup in.

Check and make sure we have the batteries for the generator. It will run our refridgerator and freezer, make it possible to cook and to run the water pump so we can flush the toilet.
