When picking my kids up from school today and driving home - my 12 year old asked me the following question.

Why do old people drive so slow?

Didn't know what to say - so i mumbled something about slower reflexes?

Can someone explain?

I would have said, "we dont' drive slowly, we drive sanely..and you damned better do the same when you get your license! " That would have put an end to that one quickly. Phil

When I was younger I drove faster and got speeding tickets. I love the speed and the power of a good car. As I've gotten older I have also become wiser. I drive the speed limit because I know I could hurt someone or myself, and I no longer have to pay speeding tickets, which make my insurance go up.
Next time, just tell your child "because that person has lived long enough to gain some wisdom."

As a rule seniors tend to do the speed limit instead of 10 over for safety. That would make us seem to drive slow. I think most of us have learned after many accidents there is a speed limit for a reason and getting there 5 minutes sooner isn't worth the risk.
Now, don't get me in a desolate road, I don't do the speed limit there. No one to get hurt but me!

You might want to explain that when you were younger you too wanted to go fast . But as you grew older and wiser you realized that although going fast is fun , it's not wise and can get you killed .
Start pointing out wrecked cars and accidents . And ask your kids if they think the people survived . That'll get them thinking in the right direction .

Since I was about 10 , I never forgot seeing a dead man lying in the median with both arms and legs bent the wrong way , and with his family crying over his body.

I'm a "Boomer" & I don't drive slow. As for the SC, I have no idea why they drive so slow. Maybe they're not in a hurry to get to their destination or maybe their driving reflexes aren't as sharp as they used to be. Maybe they're going the speed limit & the others aren't huh?

First off, not all older folks drive slow: 62 doing 95 anywhere I can get away with it.
But generally, slower reflexes & safety are a concern for us older farts. Some of us anyway!

More careful, and adjusting for slower reflexes as well as road conditions. Not in a real hurry to get anyplace in this rush-rush world.

Better safe than sorry. I don't think the older generation is in as big of hurry as the younger ones. Why risk a speeding ticket just to keep up with traffic? If an officer decides to pull you over, do you think he will accept that as the reason you were speeding?

nothing slow about the way I drive......I am always wanting to get where i gotta be as fast as i can----within reasonable means.....

maybe others drive slow because everyone else is always in a hurry, so it looks as if they are driving slower, but they are actually the ones doing the speed limit.......

Slower reflexes is correct as a generalization. To be nice you might add that since their reaction time is slower they are driving slower to be safe.

Not me I have a lead foot. The really old that do drive slow just want to get where they are going and in one piece.
