My husband & I are thinking of a little girl's name but not sure the 'feminine' way to spell it. Payten? Peyton? Other spellings? I know this name can be used for both boys and girls.

Payton, I think.

Peyton Manning has single-handedly made the "e" version of the name masculine. Of course, there was Walter Payton. And the tv series was Peyton Place ... so there's room to argue that either variant can be used for a girl or a boy.

For girls, both versions ranked similarly on the Top 1000 baby names used in the US last year. For girls, the "a" version was the 163rd most popular name; the "e" version, 138. (You can search yourself at www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames.)

But for boys, Peyton was clearly ahead of Payton. The "e" version ranked 154th, while Payton all the way back there at 267.

My best guess? A girl named Peyton is far more likely to be mistaken for a boy than a girl named Payton. It's a subtle difference, but not an insignificant one.

If all that makes your head spin, there's always the similar and undeniably feminine Piper.

Good luck!

I think Payton wins as far as feminine spellings go. Peyton looks masculine because of the "e".

I'd take your spelling of Payten, drop the "e" and turn it into Payton.

I think Payten looks more girly. If we ever have a little boy I want to name him Peyton. I love this name. My husband thinks it's cuter s a girl name though. :) Good Luck and Congrats! :)

I've seen Payton as the feminine spelling but I really like Peyton! For an asian twist, maybe try Paiton or Peiton.

Lovely name, really good choice.

The boy's and girl's name Payton \pa(y)-ton\ is pronounced PAYT-en. It is of Irish origin. Variant of Patrick.

Payton has 1 variant form: Peyton.

So even though I like the name Peyton ( how I would spell it) You have to remember your naming little girl Patrick
