What was the first method of communcating world wide?

The first method of international communication was the telegraph. The first international telegragh cable was layed between the UK and the USA in 1858, with further cables being layed directly from the UK to the rest of the British Empire in the following decade. By 1875 it was possibly to transmit directly from London to just about anywhere in the world. Radio telecommunications followed, with Marconi making the first trans-atlantic broadcast in 1901. Not exactly post office type (that came later), but eg. despatches and orders which were sent by the Royal Navy from London to ships stationed in India or Australia
