All answers so far are valid. Obvious too. Admittedly I like Enords as an abstract notion. In that case however; you might consider the weight bearing capability of the glass and how it's supported.

really placemats or coasters are the only way. there is no surface protectors that you could apply to glass. patio tables use a pattern glass thats how you could hide scratches. only problem is the pattern glass is not produced in heavy gauges only 1/4 inch or less

As nice as they are it is tuff not getting any scratches on them I would use place mats, coasters, or table cloth ,we have a glass coffee table, just a few months old you couldn't tell it by looking at it, you would think it was older.....
