de·cel·er·ate (d-sl-rt)
v. de·cel·er·at·ed, de·cel·er·at·ing, de·cel·er·ates
v.tr.
1. To decrease the velocity of.
2. To slow down the rate of advancement of: measures intended to decelerate the arms buildup.
v.intr.
To decrease in velocity
something tells me you need this answer in my own words. okay, I'll try. velocity is the rate at which the distance between to points is closed.
I would express that as Velocity=Distance/Time
if at a certain velocity (5mph) the distance (5 miles) is closed in one hour, then deceleration is a decrease in velocity causing a longer time differential. (4mph=5 miles/xTime(1hr 15 minutes))
oops, just looked up acceleration and noticed that time is squared. I don't know why. I was an art major with a minor in Bible.
Plus, if a change in direction is ACceleration. What would be the opposite of a change in direction that could be defined as DEceleration?
