"...both Hitler and Stalin were abnormal. For laymen to debate, however, whether this means they were either clinically or legall insane is an unprofitable exercise....in neither case did it disable them from functioning as masterly politicians....Among the many people who had to deal with Stalin at close quarters, and who survived to give their impressions, it is hard to find one to say that he was mad. On the contrary, he left the impression of a man in full posession of his faculties who knew what he was doing, retained control of the situation....even when the fear and tension in Moscow became almost unbearable"

Great question.
I have read a couple of bios about Stalin, and the experts can't seem to agree if he was crazy or not! Definitely a bit disturbed, and really paranoid, but I do not believe he was crazy. I believe he was just evil and wanted power by any means necessary. Pyschopaths are people who are crazy and don't even know it, and they do crazy things. Stalin knew exactly what he was doing --- killing innocents!

Probably a combination of both. Although Stalin hated priviledge, he made sure that he had priviledge himself by knocking off alleged conspirators Mafia-style.
This is the same guy who accused WW2 Russian marshal Georgi Zhukov of a "cult of the personality" when he himself was a personality cult.

Stalin was a psychopath the way many of us are. ie. not caring for others in the process of satisfying himself . Emotionally and ideologically. As he had an ideology that governed a state, the impact of his madness was much more

For sure Josif Stalin died for a degerative illness of the brain that drove him to coma. In his last years he had signs of paranoia, probably due to this problem. But during the thirties he was not ill at all. He was simply pitiless.... His best word "Any man is a problem, no man, no problem"...
