Victaulic is the name brand of a pipe connecting system. It has a groove either cut or pressed into the end pf the pipe. A clamp with a rubber seal locks into the groove. Most have 2 bolts for securing the clamp. Mainly used for fire protection systems. If you go to a warehouse type store (open ceilings) you will be able to see the pipes and clamps. I have also installed these systems in food processing plants and one cooling unit. They also have a little "give" and will remained sealed with as much as six degrees offset.

It is the brand name of a patented system that uses specially shaped bits that are either formed into or welded on to pipes, usually fairly large pipes, that allow a fitted rubber compression ring to be clamped in place at the joint with a steel or cast iron fitting, thus joining and sealing the connection, while allowing the union to be easily broken for inspection, repair, or to clear clogged lines.

It's usually used in industrial settings for non-hazardous, low to mid pressure process piping.

Not generallly used in sprinklers because of the high pressure involved and the possibility of failure of the rubber seal during a fire.
