Sorry, not to many fond memories of my childhood , There was no form of birth control in those days , we had 12 brothers and sister My dad had allergies, mostly to work my ma was very sickly, our food supply was ,oatmeal, cornmeal and miss a meal. We lived in northern Michigan where it is very cold and lots on blizzards , So much snow that Santa couldn't make it in either, We had no in door plumbing, but we did have the sears catalog, We all moved away and we learn from our experience, One is you do have to get schooling , and work hard and nothing is handed to you.

My Dad was a tailgunner on B-36's and it seemed he was always on a flight somewhere so he wasn't home that much. I remember he had just bought a brand new 1955 Pontiac 2 door. How he afforded it back then I'll never know.
One night after supper he told my Mom he was going out to the car to listen to the fight on the radio and I asked if I could go too.
So there I was, 5 years old, in the back seat of my Dad's brand new 1955 Pontiac, staring at this little red light in the middle of the dash listen to Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson beat the crap out of each other and accepting a small sip from my Dad's beer every now and then.

What a time.

This is part of a piece that I wrote some time ago, hope it fits the bill. My childhood, the best years of my life, living in a family where kindness was second nature to them. Of siblings, some younger, some older, but still a happy family. I thought of a time when every day was a great adventure and when adults who cared and loved me set my values. Of holidays by the sea, a rented cottage on a wild coast where children lived in a make believe world of pirates and smugglers and fortunes in gold bullion just waiting to be discovered. I can see now in my minds eye, the wild sea and the white capped waves. I could hear the boom of the waves as they threw themselves on the shingle and the gurgling noise as the water drained from the pebbles. I could smell the odour of the sea that tangy aroma of the brine, the freshness and best of all I could feel the tranquillity. The wind would blow in my face, it was wet with moisture from the sea, my hair was blown this way and that way and I would be at peace with creation.

Every Sunday would be football Sunday. My parents and four other couples would rotate as hosts for the Green Bay Packer games on TV. So, all of us kids would be together every weekend during football season at someone else's house. Jay's house always had the cool washtub we'd ride down the stairs in, Dani's house always had the best basement for hide and seek, and our place was always best for sledding and making snowmen. Of course, now that I'm older, I realized the parents just got together to get lit up and watch football. LOL

Theposts. Just read them. Some so lovely one so sad. I just remember visiting my cousins, on theIrish side of the family, they were older, and my one cousin always reading me stories. My dad playing the paino. My holidays in Margate, Uvongo, Hibberdene with my folks. The fancy dress parade at one of the hotels, where my dad went as "Georgous Guss", he looked a site, I have th ephotos. women frilly knickers, tennis shoes and socks, a womens tennis dress on, and ahis hair curled(OMG) with a boy in his hair. (He was a very funny man, always joking and laughing) so heenjoyed this so much. Playing cowboys and crooks with the two boys who lived each side of me. And playing at the small lake opposite, with my late friend Rosemary. Fishing for crabs while sitting on a branch, overhanging the lake. Climbing the tree where we tied a rope and would swing and then let go and fly into the water.

Riding our bicycles (we turned the handle bars uside down) down the hill that led to the lake and riding straight into the water, using her brother's little canoe. That lake was OURS.
And Friday nights was movie night at the local old fashioned cinema. Spending the night at a friends and waking up at midnight, for a "midnight feast", with stuff from the fridge. Lollies and whaever we culd get our hands on. Doing concerts after school in the classroom, comedy, for the kids who were waiting to be collected. I had a wonderful, most beautiful, childhood. Thank God. The spellcheck is never going to work!

Definitely my most memorable and favorite childhood memory, I have 3.
1. My diaper getting bit off by a dog when I was an infant
2. My friend shoving peas down my diaper when we were toddlers
3. When I was about 5 or so, my dad was putting something together out in the garage and I wanted to make him some lunch so I made him a peanut butter and gummy bear sandwitch! :)

One of my fondest memories was when I was 12 in 1956 and my mom took my brother and I on a train trip to California from Toronto. when we got to Chicago we switched trains after having breakfast and boarded The Super Chief ! It had a dome sightseeing car and on the lower level of our car was a huge washroom that smelled so clean (I was impressed) !
It took us three days and I'll never forget when we got to Needles ,Calif. our air conditioner broke down and we had to get off while they fixed it . It was 112degrees! The dining cars were awesome on the train and the food second to none. We were free to roam the train as long as we were quiet and we finally got to Los Angeles where my aunt picked us up at the station and drove us to Maywood to stay with my maternal grandmother who we were meeting for the first time. It was a real life adventure for us and thankyou for asking .

In the movie Forrest Gump remember when Forrest met Ginny on the school bus and I think the narrater said "no one ever ask me what I thought" I looked like Ginny and felt invisible.

One afternoon my family was in our front yard. The adults were talking and I was playing on the ground I felt 100 miles away. My dad came over kneeled to eye level
and took a dollar bill out of his wallet (a vast amount in 1951 when I was 4) He looked straight into my eyes and said "This is yours, spend it anyway you want", what I HEARD was you are important, valuable and I DO see you! Money wasn't my profit, dad made a huge deposit in my heart and my memories.

Aside from the many, many hours of riding my bike that gave me such pleasure, I think my fondest memory was of the trips we'd make 'home' to Cincinnati and stay with my maternal grandparents. That house was so full of love and fun and good food and great times! I was super spoiled by my grandad and followed him everywhere! He would also go out back and pick cherries or peaches and make me home made ice cream with the old fashioned crank ice cream machine and afterward he'd let me lick the 'dasher'
