In practical terms, socialism is sharing. It is the spirit of Jesus... almost like communism, minus the violent and totalitarian aspects of most Marxist-based societies. Imagine sharing and caring and working together without a gun to your head, but because you want to share. To work, it requires a certain eschewing of materialism.
That's socialism.

socialism is the period of transition from a capitalist society to communism. its the period of the dictatorship of the proletariat (the working class). communism, the disappearance of classes and thus the withering away of the state, is the goal of a true socialist state. state ownership of the means of production does not make a country socialist if that country is still under the control of the burgoise (the rich).
