I got a self-watering pot, which I was told was the kind to get for the plant I bought (can't remember the name, but its a common leafy plant w/ stalks of single white petals surrounding a pollen core...anyone know what its called?). Anyways, its been months, and I have kept the base filled, but the water just doesn't pass through the durn thing. The plant ends up drying out, and I just pour water directly on it to keep it going.

Is this a faulty product, or should I have soaked the pot before using or something?

No it is a not faulty pot what you are doing is wetting the roots not the soil the roots moisture is what you are looking for to maintain your plant

The best self watering pot I have ever used is one you can make yourself before you put the soil in a new pot you are planting in cut lenghts of wicking for candles or for oil lamps twice the height of your pot ( if it is a tropical plant that requires a lot of water and the pot is large then put in one every 6 inches of pot size..... ie....18 inch pot.....3 wicks) Plant your plant in pot with wick reaching from the water saucer into the soil just under the plant and not to the bottom of the pot putting in at least 2" of soil between the pot bottom and the bottom of the plant. This will keep the plant watered as long as there is water in the saucer.

Sounds like a peace lilly. They don't like being wet all the time. Letting them stand in water will rot the roots and kill it.
