There's an open pipe sticking up in the back with a rubber hose sticking in it. Is the water overflowing into it? If it is, simply turn the screw on top of the piece in the left corner about a half a turn, this will cause the ball to cut off the water a little sooner making the water level lower. Keep moving it about a half turn at a time until you can flush and the water level stop about 1/2 to 1 inch below the top of the pipe. The other place that can cause it to run is the flapper, the big rubber piece that fits over the hole in the bottom of the tank. This can become warped and cause it not to seal anymore. It's very easy to replace too.

If it is running from the tank to the bowl, it is the flapper seal or the tank is overfilling and the water is running into the overflow tube. Turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush. raise the flapper and clean the bottom surface of the flapper and the area it sits in. Turn the water back on and see if this helps. If water is running into the overflow, adjust the fill-valve so the water level is 1/2 to 3/4" below the top of the tube.

Do you have a flowmaster, with just the flapper? If so there is an adjustment clip to adjust the float to turn it off when filled. The flapper may need the chain raised up 2 links.
The flowmaster will come apart to clean and so does the ball type.
The kind that have the ball have a screw to adjust the ball or bend it down, check it is not hitting the side to stick
Check the flush handle to see if it is all screwed in.

If the water level in the tank is getting too high, then it's running down the drain pipe that keeps the tank from overflowing. There should be a screw or other adjustment that will allow you to set the water level a little lower, so that when it shuts off, it won't be higher than the drain.
Good luck!

Check the level pump which stops water from coming in the tank of the toilet when it gets filled. I think it is broken and u have to replace it...!! That's the main cause of the leakage or running of water most of the times!!

the new chain may have slack in it, that may end up under the new flapper (rubber flap). if you jiggle the handle it will pull the slack out from under.
