I have a Christmas party to go to in December and I know I will not be able to lose all the weight I want to by then. My baby just turned one but I still have pregnancy weight to lose :( (he's my 4th baby and the tummy muscles didn't snap back as easily this time). So, which style is the most flattering for someone with a bit of a flabby tummy and larger hips/buttocks? Serious answers only please. Its hard to see dresses that look so great in the catalogs or online on skinny models and not be able to tell if they will hide your flaws or magnify them!

I know you said serious answers only, but please DO NOT buy anything with sequins or snowmen etc glued on the front. I would avoid buying anything "christmas-y" looking. Buy something nice that you can wear all year long and use earrings or other accessories for a holiday touch. Don't buy anything online or from a catalog- you need to try it on in person, and will it ship in time for you? A good department store should do alterations- free ones if you're lucky. If not, give yourself time to get it altered at a tailor shop so you have it in time for your event. Ask the sales clerk for advice and explicitly tell them what your needs are- don't be cute and make them guess. They should be able to help you. Get a size that actually fits you so you'll be comfortable. The "Empire Waist" that's currently popular makes even scrawny people look pregnant- honestly, do you want to minimize your bust and maximize your belly? You don't mention really what you look like- complexion, eye/hair color. Black is a safe color, but you might try other dark colors such as forest green, dark wine, charcoal, brown or navy blue- but check with the sales staff as to what is either current or classic. Would a dark dress/top under an open light-colored jacket camouflage your belly? Be sure your dress/top creates the look you're going for even when you get hot & ditch the jacket- if that works for you. Good luck!

I would try lane Bryant, Chadwick's on-line, Catherine's, or any plus size store near you. Try to go for something rich in color like burgundy, ruby red, sapphire blue, navy, or classic black these colors are very slimming to start with. You should also try something on a A-line which is also flattering to the figure. Try a dress with a v-neck which will give the illusion of a more narrow torso and waist. As far as length goes if its going to be short, just make sure it doesn't go above the knee. You want to be very sophisticated and it doesn't matter what kind of body you have short is short. I know you don't feel that great about your body so just make sure whatever you wear, your comfortable and most of all feel good about yourself. GoodLuck!

Two ways to go, depending on how your body is balanced. If you have somewhat narrow hips (i.e. your shoulders are as wide as your hips) you might want to opt for a low riding wide belt and a very lose top with a pencil skirt. That would hide the stomach area.
The other option (that's what my mom did after her youngest child was born) is to avoid belts altogether. Princess cut is the most slimming, it creates longer silhouette without emphasizing your stomach or hips.

In addition to "hiding" the drawbacks emphasise something else. You might want to wear a beatiful shawl or a scarf.

If it goes well with your complection, wear rich colors like burgundy, hunter green, deep dark blue. Actually, visually "rich" is a good theme in my opinion for a fuller figure.

Don't forget about the accessories. You can wear something large and shiny.

Oh, gosh, not the empire waist, as the guy above me said. It makes even skinny teenagers look fat/pregnant, let alone someone with fuller figure.

A princess style dress looks good on everyone. It should have a rounded or square front with a V that meets in the stomach and a bodice that accentuates the natural waist. The bottom of the dress should flare outward like a ball gown.

Look for a one piece dress with long flowing lines in a dark colour like black, blue or green. An a-line shape that flares at the bottom or a bias cut wrap would be good. Draw attention to your bust with a flattering neckline and add some stylish jewlery.

Try shopping some of the plus size stores online for ideas. Catherines, JMS, or any retail online store in the plus size dept. Usually for your shape an "A"line dress even short is most flattering as well as comfortable & chic.
Good Luck!

A few things to consider: interesting neckline or jewelery to draw attention upwards, empire waist - very forgiving, gathered in the middle to hide belly, a dark color or print, not so short of a hemline - don't want to look stubby, a longlish, flowing jacket, a graphic print that is vertical to elongate your appearance, and foundation garments (girdles) are very fashionable these days, if you want to go that route. People tell me that it gives them a sense of stature and sensuality - straighter back, control, and less of what you don't want to pooch. Above all have it be something you feel great in. That will negate the post baby pounds and radiate your beauty.
