I have a US bought a1310n hp computer with a 300 watt power supply. I want to go in for a Nvidia Geforce 8600GT graphics card. I do have a PCI Express Slot (x16) . I wanted to know that if i install that card (it requires 300 watt power supply) will it slow down the speed of my computer (like sometime stop writing a CD ... or something like that)

It all depends on what else you have installed on your pc. Every device (hard drives, cd drives, floppy drives, addon cards like modems and sound and video cards) all use power from the power supply as well as the processor and any onboard devices. So in order to properly answer your question you would have to calculate what each device is using in terms of power wattage. If you exceed the ouput of your power supply then the pc will experience sudden shutdowns and performance issues.

Now that being said, it's probably best to just upgrade your power supply to at least 500W and then you probably won't have anything to worry about. BTW 500W power supplys are pretty cheap.

Power supply of HP a1310n provides up to 19 amps on the +12V rail. Your processor draws up to about 7.5 amps. 8600GT only draws about 3.5 amps. The fans, CD drive and HDD would hardly draw more than 4 amps. Your power supply would have no trouble powering the 8600GT all day long.
