Sometimes they'll test you whether you know that human dsDNA is complementary and anti-parallel so when they give you the strand 5'-CTAGCGATT-3' and you work out the complementary strand as 3'-GATCGCTAA-5' then you find the answer is sometimes written 5'-AATCGCTAG-3'

Ok its really easy In DNA there are four bases A, T, C AND G. they always are paired with bases which fit them; A goes with T, C goes with G. However mRNA (and tRNA) are slightly different in its structure and can not fit T's so they are replaced by U's (uracil) The letters are in columns of the following order; DNA strand 1, DNA strand 2, mRNA matching strand 1, tRNA A T U A T A A U C G G C G C C G Your sequence is ACGTT (STRAND 1) so on the mRNA match it will be UGCAA Hope this helps

Since there is only one complementary base for any of the bases found in DNA and in RNA, one can reconstruct a complementary strand for any single strand. This is essential for DNA replication.

For example, the complementary strand of the DNA sequence

A G T C A T G
is

T C A G T A C

I agree that it will be GATCGCTAA.

To remember which bases match each other:
-- put the letters with straight lines together A-T. You can make an A and a T with just straight lines.
-- put the round letters together C-G.
