if the largest to smallest sheep is named as a, b, c. then
a > b > c
a + b + c = 152 --> (1)
b - c = 7 --> (2)
a = 3c -->(3)

(1)-(2):
(a + b + c) - (b - c) = 152 - 7
a+b+c-b+c = 145
a+2c = 145 -->(4)

from (3):
3c+2c = 145
c = 145/5
c=29

from (3):
a = 3c = 3*29

assign c's and a's value to (1) u'll get a's value.

I can't believe people just give the answers- don't do that! The human brain won't learn that way. But since everyone put something, the correct answers are the one's with 36 being the middle sheeps weight. BUTTTTTT people did not set up the equations right. Since the smaller sheep is 7 less than the middle sheep, it Small Sheep should be (X-7). Since larger sheep is 3 times that of smallest sheep, Larger sheep should be 3(X-7). Leaving X to be the weight of middle sheep. You are left with

(X-7)+(X)+3(X-7)=152.

Only reason I pointed this out is cuz any sane teacher would dock you points if the steps weren't done right. In algebra there can be different ways to get answers but if you set up the equations wrong, you may just get luck to get the correct answer. If someone already put this, I apologize. It's late here. Gnite =)

let:
m= the weight of the middle sheep
s = the weight of the small sheep = m-7
l = the weight of the large sheep = 3 (m-7)

The sum of the three sheep = 152
s+m+l = 152
Substitute their weight as related to 'm' above:

(m-7) + m + 3(m-7) = 152
4(m-7) + m = 152

which becomes:
4m-28+m=152

add 28 to both sides to isolate the variable m:
4m-28+m+28 = 152+28

becomes:
4m+m = 180

5m = 180

divide both sides by 5 to solve for m:
m = 180/5 = 36lbs

putting this back into the let statements:

m = middle sheep = 36 lbs
s = small sheep = m-7 = 29 lbs
l = large sheep = 3(m-7) = 3 (29) = 87 lbs

Total = 29+36+87 = 152

Old MacDonald's whole 3 sheep herd weighs 152 lbs.

smallest lamb = middle lamb minus 7 lbs. ( s = m -- 7 )

Middle lamb = m

Largest lamb = 3 ( m -- 7 )

So far, so good?

.........152 = m + ( m -- 7 ) + 3 ( m -- 7 )
.........152 = m + m -- 7 + 3 m -- 21
.........152 = 2 m + 3 m -- 7 -- 21
.........152 = 5 m -- 28
.152 + 28 = 5 m -- 28 + 28
.........180 = 5 m
.....180 / 5 = 5 m / 5
............36 = m

Ok. The middle lamb is 36 lbs.

The smallest lamb is seven pounds less. 36 -- 7 = 29 lbs.

The big guy is three times the weight of the little one. 3 x 29 = 87 lbs.

Lets see if it adds up to one hundred fifty-two pounds of lamb chops.

.....29
.....36
..+ 87
--------
...152 lbs.

Yep. There you go. Please pass the BBQ sauce.

I'll send you a bill.

Best Wishes

x= small sheep

x + (x+7) + 3x = 152
5x +7 =152
5x = 145
x = 29

Smallest Sheep = 29 pounds
Middle Sheep = 36 pounds
Large Sheep = 87 Pounds

My husband worked out your problem.

The things we know:

A+B+C = 152
A+7=B
3A=C
Now substitute the A values into the top equasion.
A+A+7+3A=152
5A+7=152
5A=145
A=29
A+7=B=36
3A=87=C

So the smallest sheep (A) weighs 29 pounds.
The middle sheep (B) weighs 36 pounds.
The largest sheep (C) weighs 87 pounds.

m = the middle sheep
m - 7 = the small sheep
3m = the largest sheep

m + m -7 + 3m = 152
2m - 7 + 3m = 152
5m - 7 = 152
+7 +7
5m = 159
5m/5 = 159/5
m = 31.8

So,
middle-sized sheep = 31.8 pounds
small size sheep = 31.8 - 7 = 24.8 pounds
large size sheep = 3(31.8) = 95.4 pounds

If you add all of those sizes together, you should get the combined wieght, 152 pounds.....lets check it to see.....
31.8 + 24.8 + 95.4 = 152

NOTE: SOME PROBLEMS REQUIRE YOU GIVE THE DECIMALS INSTEAD OF ROUNDING LIKE THE OTHER ANSWERS DID. READ YOUR PROBLEM THOROUGHLY SO YOU KNOW WHAT VALUE THEY ARE EXPECTING. UNLESS THEY TELL YOU OTHERWISE, GO WITH DECIMALS, BECAUSE ROUNDING MAY RESULT IN A WRONG ANSWER.
