In the United States, there are 3 kinds of routes:
Park & Loop: Carrier parks and walks up one side and back down the other, then drives to the next block. Good for residential areas where the mailboxes are on the house, not the street.
Hopping: Carrier drives along street, stopping at each house or two and walking up to the houses. Usually used on streets where delivery is only on one side, or where there are lots of businesses.
Driving: All mailboxes are on the street, so carrier does not need to leave the vehicle.

Our homes are down long driveways so it would take forever to stop at each house. We have mail boxes by the road so he can drive past filling several in a row and do 10 houses in the time it would take to walk to one.
If you had condos or little houses near the sidewalks it would be reasonable to walk to porches but it would still take a lot more time.
