This theory of Ghost sightings is one i have believed about certain types of visitations however i believe the door can be opened purposely as well.
I will tell you about the first spirit i ever saw,....
When i was 18 I was staying with an Uncle of mine in the city, because i had to have cat scans of my brain. That night i went off to bed early and awoke later that night, to throw up( allergic to the dye) So there i was in the loo throwing up violently when i felt a hand on my shoulder give a gentle squeeze and a pat. When i was able i turned and smiled at this man ( who looked totally solid) and then began throwing up again. I thought my Uncle had a visitor who had come to use the loo and seen this young girl throwing up and offered comfort. So I went out to the lounge room to let him know the toilet was free and to thank him. I found no one. Country girl me in the city thought~ INTRUDER!!! so i raced to wake my uncle. He calmly replied to me saying "There's someone in the house!!" With~ Is he wearing a suit? ...I think so i said~ feeling better thinking he knew the man ...when he said "Don't fret~ its just Dad"
His dad ( My dads dad) had been dead for over 20 yrs.
My Uncle calmed me down and he told me how he had been getting visits from him for over two yrs and it was his wife who first saw him in a chair by their bed. He had never made contact with them though.
I was always told that my grandfather died from some liver disease from alcohol, and that My Dad and an older Uncle had taken him to the hospital late one night and left him in the care of a nurse who forgot to tell the next nurse that he was there and he died. Dad always got rotten drunk on the anniversary of his dads death and he was not discussed at home. There were no photos of him that i knew of. Well i went home and told my Dad.....Dad then went to the back of his wardrobe and returned with a portrait of the man i had seen the night before....my grandfather. He then requested the pic be put up on the wall. It turned out that the real story was that My dad had been at a football match the day my grandfather died, and came home drunk when my grandmother asked him to take his father to the hospital. In those days the nurses would of rang the police and my uncles would of been in deep ****! so....they left him on the steps of the hospital. Bad judgment i know. Dad had been consumed with guilt for over 20 yrs. He took the fact that His Dad had cared enough about me to comfort me as forgiveness. And Dad has never gotten drunk on the anniversary again.
So this portal can be opened on purpose as well.
But yes i do also believe we catch a glimpse of the other side sometimes when we shouldent!

Well, if there's something my short life here has taught me is that everything is possible. I don't know about that, what I do know is that dimensions clash sometimes. The fact is they all occupy the same space, let's say, but they all vibrate at different frequency rates what makes one inaccessible to the other, except by certain processing when we raise our levels of vibration and by this I mean making our molecules vibrate faster than they do. It's pure physics. So what you vcould be seeing are spectres of the real body that is vibrating at a different rate in a another dimension or plane.
As far as I know, ghosts are remnants of etheric energy still strong enough to survive, they are imitations of a once living body and they reproduce their living habits. That is why people say that they see ghosts doing the same thing over and over like climbing up some staircase or playing with a ball and so on.
This is not the ultimate true but it's what I know and as far as I know it counts a possibility

When I was a kid, I imagined that dreams are the cause of "ghosts." You dream you are in a house and the people who are there experience a ghost. Your idea is just as interesting. Fun. Food for fiction. Hey, I like fiction. I'm writing a fiction book which has some incredible stuff in it.
But your idea of trans-dimensional beings and my idea of projected dreams are wrong. I learned that the world is both less miraculous *and* more wonderful than I thought. I fear that most people can't understand that.
I am awestruck by a computer-enhanced x-ray diffraction micrograph of a ribosome in a book that I have. Full page, color. It shows all the strands of nucleic acids and the proteins, etc. I am spellbound by the picture taken of galaxy M81, taken by Hubble in May. I am fascinated by the life cycle of plasmodial slime mold. Heck, I'm still amazed by dot matrix printers! There are wonders galore. The world, as it is, really *is* enough...for me, anyway.
Biohazard, I'd sure like to see that research, and how they determined that an ordinary wave interference pattern meant something from another Universe or dimension or whatever. Interference patterns are as common as dirt. In fact, if I remember correctly, they are used to demonstrate the wave nature of light.

Well, if it was a time-portal I would imagine it to function two-ways...so the person we are seeing is also able to see us.
I don't know how many people have seen futuristic-like ghosts??
Edit:
My original theory stinks to high heaven...
Since only ghosts can travel through these time-portals and future doesn't exists...ghosts don't exist in future...
Only old ghosts can be seen...
I'm such a fool...and this idea still stinks :)
But if the idea is to go between paralel realities...even this would be possible...

it would be possible, now im no scienctist...but your question reminds me of a story i came across long ago...i cannt recall every detail, but a young boy in his teens, was curious about something, his father was in an occult, and he was always told to stay out of the basement, for what ever reason...anyway, he just got so curious, he didnt go down there, but stuck his head through the window...which was at the bottom of the house...as he stuck his head through, he said he had travelled to a different time, past, he was in a big corn field, and the people could see him, they just looked up, in amazement, as if to say where did you come from, he could see them, and they could see him, he panicked and quickly returned....thats the most i remember, and it was a true story......

Yes, we could live here and also in next moment/s univers and if so we could somehow feel the time as moving forward and up in a direction to see ourselves in the other world and from there to look back to our future here.

The idea of seeing through time sure dovetails with ghost sightings, doesn't it? I'm not saying it's impossible, but when you have to rearrange the laws of the universe and recreate reality in such a way as to accommodate your belief in ghosts, it doesn't bode well for the phenomenon.

Of course...I have read about this in one of Sylvia Brown's books. I know...I"m not really into her myself but she does make some interesting claims and has a few theories that I want to look into. Even the craziest people have grains of truth given to them by the Goddess. I came across it myself in the ghost town of Bannock Montana about 15 years ago. It was quite the experience....Too long to tell here but very interesting none the less.....

well, quantum physics states that photons from another (parallel) universe affect our photons, as shown in an experiment in which individual photons are let through slits in a board, only to show a standard interference pattern, as if other photons were affecting the pattern. i suppose there could be periodic flucuations which allow brief, hazy (for lack of a better term) looks through quantum foam into another universe. if so, ghosts could end up being the gateway to time travel (assuming of course that some universes are in different times instead of being synchronized to our time)

Interesting idea. I often wondered if it would be possible to see in the past. Maybe you couldn't travel back but observe.
