The first powered, controlled, sustained airplane flight was made by the Wright Brothers in 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
An airplane or aeroplane is a kind of aircraft, something that can fly, but is heavier than air. Airplanes are sometimes called just 'planes.

Webster defines aeroplane (airplane) as " : a powered heavier-than-air aircraft that has fixed wings from which it derives most of its lift"
So although Lillenthal did glide before Wilbur and Oroville Wright, he was killed shortly before he was able to power his 'hang gliders'.
There were several others in Europe (Including Santos Dumont, a Brazilian) and one in New Zealand who were close, but the Wright Brothers are credited with the invention of the airplane, as they were the first to have a three axis controlled, heavier than air flight.

I know, for a lot of you the USA is the entire world - so it is understandable that you think that the aeroplane was invented in the USA by the Wright brothers. Yes, they were first to perform successfully a motor powered flight. But the German Otto Lilienthal was performing much longer flights than the Wright brothers in his heavier-than-air glider about 10 years before the Wright brothers took the air for a short hop.
Wilbur Wright wrote:
Of all the men who attacked the flying problem in the 19th century, Otto Lilienthal was easily the most important. ... It is true that attempts at gliding had been made hundreds of years before him, and that in the nineteenth century, Cayley, Spencer, Wenham, Mouillard, and many others were reported to have made feeble attempts to glide, but their failures were so complete that nothing of value resulted. But Otto Lilienthal succeeded in flight"

Not sure who had the first idea of flight. That has been lost to history. Probably Adam and Eve. The first to achieve it were the Wright Brothers.
